Kabir Suman ( born Suman Chattopadhyay on 16 March 1949) is an Indian singer, songwriter, musician, music director, poet, novelist, polyglot, journalist, political activist, TV presenter, and occasional actor.[2][3] From May 2009 to 2014, he was a member of parliament of India in the 15th Lok Sabha, having been elected from the Jadavpur constituency in Kolkata from All India Trinamool Congress.[1] He changed his name from Suman Chattopadhay to Kabir Suman when he converted to Islam as a mark of protest against the killing of christian missionary Graham Staines by Hindu fundamentalist group Bajrang Dal. He shot to fame in the 1990s with albums such as Tomake Chai (I Want You) and Boshe Anko (Sit-and-Draw).[4] Kabir Suman was the pioneer of alternative Bengali music around 1991. He advocated a new trend in Bengali Music with songs that were written, composed and sung, all by a single individual. Many contemporary solo artists like Anjan Dutta, Nachiketa Chakraborty, Anupam Roy and Rupam Islam followed this trend. He has influenced bands like Chandrabindoo and Cactus. He is the first singer of Bengali music industry who is a multi-instrumentalist. He plays the piano, guitar, harmonica and the melodica in his live concerts. The majority of his concerts are entirely solo. Anjan Dutt (19 January 1953) is an Indian film director, actor and singer-songwriter of the 1990s Bengali music scene defined by anyodharar gaan (alternative music)- reminiscent of western folk music. His music is said to be influenced by blues, bluegrass, folk and country music.He is an admitted fan of Bob Dylan and his Bengali contemporary Kabir Suman. He is also an accomplished actor starting his career in Bengali cinema. His first film was Chalachitro directed by Mrinal Sen, where he won the prize for the best newcomer actor, at the Venice Film Festival. He has acted in Aparna Sen's him film, Mr. and Mrs. Iyer. He is also a national award-winning filmamker and is one of the most prominent directors of Bengali Cinema, directing The Bong Connection, Chalo Let's Go, Ranjana Ami Ar Ashbona et al.In recent years, he has been directing the Byomkesh Bakshi movie series. Nachiketa (born Bengali: নচিকেতা চক্রবর্তী Nachiketa Chakraborty) is an Indian Bengali singer-songwriter and composer who is known for his modern Bengali lyrics and natural mode of singing. He achieved fame in the early 1990s, with the release of his debut album Ei Besh Bhalo Achi.[2] He started composing and performing as a student of Maharaja Manindra Chandra College in North Kolkata,Shyambazar, an affiliated college of the University of Calcutta.[3][verification needed] In 1993 his first album Ei besh bhalo achi was released; it was an instant hit. At the initial stage he had a huge youth fan following, but gradually he has touched listeners from all age groups. The colloquial language immediately hit the stagnancy of Bengali music in the early 90s. Following the path of Kabir Suman (the then Suman Chattopadhay), Nachiketa changed the age-old concept of Bengali lyrics.
