While technically a collaboration between Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez, "Grindhouse" (2007) earns its spot on a "Best of Tarantino" list due to its potent infusion of his signature stylistic flourishes. The double-feature, comprised of Rodriguez's "Planet Terror" and Tarantino's "Death Proof," is a loving pastiche of exploitation cinema. Tarantino's contribution, "Death Proof," showcases his trademark dialogue-heavy scenes, razor-sharp wit, and a penchant for strong female characters, this time in the form of a group of stuntwomen who become Stuntman Mike's ultimate prey. The film's extended, talkative first half slowly builds tension before exploding into a thrilling, car-chase finale showcasing some of Tarantino's most inventive and visceral action sequences. Beyond the action, "Death Proof" encapsulates Tarantino's deep understanding and reverence for genre filmmaking. He meticulously recreates the gritty, low-budget aesthetic of 70s exploitation films, complete with intentionally damaged film stock, missing reels, and intentionally cheesy special effects. The soundtrack is a curated collection of classic rock and roll and funk, perfectly complementing the film's retro vibe. "Grindhouse" as a whole, but particularly "Death Proof," offers a unique and playful glimpse into Tarantino's cinematic influences, making it a quintessential, albeit often overlooked, part of his filmography and a worthy addition to any list of his best works.
