Trouble erupts in a small, quiet New England town when a man's body is found in the woods. The problem is that almost everyone in town thinks that they had something to do with his death. Set against a backdrop of stunning autumnal foliage, this darkly comedic farce follows a small group of charmingly eccentric residents—including a retired sea captain, a flighty young mother (in Shirley MacLaine's film debut), a spinster, and a struggling artist—as they repeatedly bury, unearth, and try to make sense of the corpse of Harry Worp. Their matter-of-fact approach to the macabre situation and the budding romances that blossom amidst the confusion create a uniquely whimsical and offbeat caper. *The Trouble with Harry* earns its place among Alfred Hitchcock's best films by showcasing the director's brilliant, and often overlooked, satirical wit. While devoid of his trademark suspense, it masterfully subverts his favorite themes: a dead body acts as a comedic MacGuffin, and the classic "wrong man" trope is inverted into a cast of characters who all believe they are the "right" man (or woman) for the crime. The film is a masterclass in tonal control, with Bernard Herrmann's playfully melodic score and Robert Burks' glorious Technicolor cinematography of the Vermont landscape creating a deliberate and ironic contrast to the morbid plot. It's Hitchcock at his most relaxed and mischievous, proving his genius extended far beyond suspense to the delicate art of black comedy.
