In 1831, the ambitious young Irishman Charles Adare arrives in Australia, hoping to build a new life with the help of his cousin, the newly appointed governor. His plans are quickly complicated when he meets Sam Flusky, a powerful and mysterious landowner with an ex-convict's past who proposes a lucrative business deal. Charles's world is turned upside down when he attends a dinner party at Flusky's grand, isolated mansion and discovers that his host's wife is Lady Henrietta, a woman he knew as a vibrant aristocrat back in Ireland. He finds her a broken shell of her former self, a tormented alcoholic teetering on the verge of madness, imprisoned by the dark secrets that haunt her and her husband. While often overlooked in favour of his more traditional thrillers, *Under Capricorn* earns its place among Alfred Hitchcock's best films as a fascinating and technically brilliant departure. Here, Hitchcock trades overt suspense for the slow-burn tension of a gothic melodrama, masterfully using the long, fluid camera takes he experimented with in *Rope* to immerse the viewer in the claustrophobic and psychologically charged atmosphere of the mansion. The film is a masterclass in visual storytelling, with the camera gliding through rooms to reveal hidden tensions and simmering secrets. Anchored by a devastatingly vulnerable performance from Ingrid Bergman, it is a deep, empathetic study of guilt, paranoia, and gaslighting, proving that Hitchcock's genius for exploring the darkest corners of the human psyche was not confined to a single genre.
