In 1993, scientists at the Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence Project receive a transmission from deep space detailing an alien DNA structure, along with instructions on how to combine it with human DNA. Ignoring the potential dangers, they proceed, and the result is Sil, a hybrid who grows at an accelerated rate into a beautiful woman (Natasha Henstridge). After a violent escape from the lab, it becomes clear that Sil is a sensual but deadly creature driven by a primal instinct to mate and reproduce. A specialist team is assembled to hunt her down, but they are unprepared for a foe who can change from a seductive human to an armour-plated killing machine, designed by H.R. Giger, in the blink of an eye. While perhaps an outlier in a filmography known for taut thrillers like *No Way Out* and *The Bank Job*, *Species* earns its place among Roger Donaldson's best films by showcasing his mastery of suspense and high-concept execution. Donaldson elevates what could have been a simple B-movie into a slick, high-tension blockbuster, expertly pacing the relentless cat-and-mouse chase across Los Angeles. He draws strong performances from a surprisingly prestigious cast and seamlessly integrates the era's groundbreaking practical and digital effects, making the Giger-designed creature both terrifying and iconic. The film is a testament to Donaldson's skill as a craftsman, proving he could apply the same propulsive energy and professional polish that defined his thrillers to the sci-fi horror genre, resulting in a stylish, memorable, and immensely entertaining creature feature.
